IAN COGNITO
Cogs remains a true original; If you haven’t seen him, you won’t have a clue who we’re talking about, and if you have then you certainly won’t have forgotten the name. Tales of power drills, genital exposure and traumatised promoters follow in his wake as does the hysterical laughter of those who have been lucky enough to see one of this country’s greatest comedians.
“Ian Cognito delivered a performance with all the presence, clarity and direction of a true virtuoso player. This electrifying, terrifying and ultimately vulnerable performer warmed a cold Glasgow audience to boiling point. Stand up should always be like this” – The List
“Cognito’s indignant polemic is a bracing antidote to more amiable routines. When a comedian can transform rage into humour without diluting their passion, the result is always riveting. Share his inspired madness” – The Guardian
“Cognito puts them all in the shade. If you want to know what’s wrong with New Britain, Ian Cognito’s going to tell you. And if you don’t, you’d be advised to keep your mouth shut. Just stunning” – The Guardian
If messed up comedians are the most interesting, Ian Cognito is up there with the greats. He rants but not without thought. How is the comeback going? Very nastily, thanks” – The Evening Standard
“After half an hour in the company of the constantly self-excoriating Cognito, all other comedians begin to seem like people in public relations.” – The Evening Standard
Cognito is still hard to ignore, a raging bull goaded by a flaming sense of injustice.” – The Independent
“There is no doubting Ian Cognito’s blazing talent as a stand up, but his capacity for self destruction has ensured he’s never gained the recognition or status he’d otherwise have so effortlessly claimed. You know Cognito will never prostitute what he does just to play the game, he is a comedian through and through.” – Time Out
STEVE DAY
Steve Day describes himself as Britains only deaf comedian, if there are any others he hasn’t heard.
In March 2012 Steve was chosen out of 2000 applicants to be taken on by The BBC as a trainee presenter specialising in sport and comedy shows, part of The corporations Presentable search for new talent.
In 2011 Steve returned to The Edinburgh fringe with Run, Deaf Boy, Run. A show about attempting to run The London Marathon. ‘A hugely entertaining, cheerfully uplifting treat of a show’ said Chortle.com, and The Scotman called it joyful, heart-warming, and funny. Both gave him four stars.
It wasn’t a fluke. Chortle.co.uk gave him five stars in 2007 for Deafy’s Island Discs, a show The Sunday Times called ‘Funny and Moving’. This show toured the UK in 2008, Steve’s third national tour of the uk, and has been performed in several countries in Europe and translated into Italian. No-one knows why.
A familiar voice on Radio 4, Steve has appeared many times on You and Yours, was a token man on Woman’s Hour, has appeared in two radio dramas, All Fingers and Thumbs with Bill Nighy, whom he punched dramatically, and Sound Barriers with Patricia Routledge and Caroline Quentin, both of whom he was prevented from punching.
A disabled performer, Steve is more concerned with success in the mainstream comedy circuit, but is happy to ‘deaf it up’ as necessary if the money is ok and there are sandwiches.
“revelatory and very funny” – The Guardian”wonderful” – Bath Chronicle”warm, funny, frank and thought-provoking” – The Scotsman”the best comedy often comes from real-life observations, something that Day had down to a T” – Brighton Argus”a very different kind of comedy … something which Day seems particularly proud of, and so he should be” – Three Weeks”a hilarious, hard-of-hearing, heavenly host” – Time Out Comic’s Choice”has a self-effacing charm which endears him to audiences” – Chortle
